Medicaid expansion was approved as part of Arizona’s budget and signed into law by Governor Jan Brewer on June 17th.

This law will restore coverage to thousands of childless adults who are eligible for AHCCCS under an Arizona voter mandate that passed in 2000, but was unfunded because of budget challenges. It also includes coverage for childless adults from 100 to 133 percent of the federal poverty level (approximately $11,500 to $15,000 for a single adult).

What a great presentation by Lee Renda, RD, at the Barrow Pituitary Center Support Group Meeting in August.

The discussion inspired many patients to share their personal stories. The audience suggested several topics for future meetings, including psychiatric issues with pituitary disorders.

Significant elements of the Affordable Care Act are close to launching. Beginning Tuesday, Oct. 1, every state will open an “insurance marketplace” that will enable uninsured individuals to shop for health insurance. You will be able to sign up for insurance plans or apply for Medicaid at that time, and the actual insurance coverage will take effect Wednesday, Jan. 1.

Information about financial assistance will also be available. Financial assistance will be based upon income. Individuals will complete a single application to determine whether they are eligible for either Medicaid or insurance subsidies.

For more information about the marketplace, visit http://www.healthcare.gov or call toll-free 1-800-318-2596. Arizona is developing its own website,http://www.coveraz.org, that will provide more specific information about the state’s program.
